5 Desk Posture Habits to Protect Your Spine

The best posture is your next posture. Our bodies are built to move, so no single “perfect” position will protect you if you hold it all day. These habits keep you moving and comfortable.

1. Set your screen at eye level

The top of your monitor should be roughly level with your eyes so you are not constantly looking down. If you use a laptop, prop it up on a stand or some books and add a separate keyboard.

2. Support your lower back

Sit back in your chair so your lower back is supported by the backrest, using a small cushion if needed. This helps maintain the natural inward curve of your spine and reduces strain.

3. Move every 30 minutes

Set a gentle reminder to stand, stretch, or walk for a minute or two every half hour. Frequent movement breaks matter far more than sitting perfectly still.

4. Relax your shoulders

Keep your elbows close to your body and supported so your shoulders can drop away from your ears. Tension here is a common driver of neck pain and headaches.

5. Build a movement habit outside work

A body that is strong and mobile copes far better with desk work. Regular walking, mobility work, and strengthening give your spine the resilience it needs.
